SKKN The application of mind mapping technique by using digital technology to enhance 10th graders’ speaking skills at Dien Chau 3 High School
As a teacher at High School for many years, the authors have realized that speaking is a very important skill in language learning. EFL learners' success in English speaking brings them benefits not solely in their English learning but also in their lifelong careers. In the first place, speaking skill is very important in language classroom now. Language learners appreciate the importance of speaking in learning language process because speaking can help learners to express their thoughts and opinions and to develop their language proficiency. According to Lindsay and Knight (2006), We speak for many reasons - to be sociable, because we want something, because we want other people to do something, to do something for someone else, to respond to someone else, to express our feelings or opinions about something, to exchange information, to refer to an action or event in the past, present, or future, the possibility of something happening, and so on. For numerous EFL learners, English speaking seems to be challenging. In the EFL classroom, the students are asked to perform their speaking tasks within a certain length of time.
Thus, numerous students cannot occasionally accomplish their tasks. Theoretically, a mind map is basically a diagram that connects information around a central subject. I like to think of it like a tree, although it has more of a radial structure. Invented by Buzan (2005:1), mind mapping is a very powerful tool for brainstorming, creative thinking, problem solving, organizing of ideas and of course, note taking. Mind mapping as a note taking technique can be used for almost any subject and done in any language. By using mind map, we can recall the concept of mapping that we will used to speak. In addition, in the process of teaching, it is easy to see that learners at Dien Chau 3 High School are lacking essential skills in speaking. They often produce the speaking at low level and under their teachers' expectation. As a result, they encounter a large number of difficulties such as shortage of motivation, limited background knowledge. Not only the researcher but also other teachers interviewed can see this pessimistic actual state. They agree that majority of students at Dien Chau 3 High School are from the countryside. Their students often find it difficult to have a good environment of English for their poor schooling, especially rarely have chance to practice English with English speaker foreigners. They do not have motivation to attempt a lot and become unconfident in speaking lessons owning to a lack of motivation and environment. It has considerably negative impact that has made me interested in for a long time in speaking.

Knowledge - Gain an overview of the topic “Viet Nam and international organisations”; - Identify and use words and phrases related to the topic “Viet Nam and international organisations”; 27 - Identify and use comparative and superlative adjectives. 2. Core competence - Develop communication skills and problem-solving skills; - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and teamwork; - Actively join in class activities. 3. Personal qualities - Develop an awareness of activities of international organizations. - Be respectful towards all nations. Stages: Teacher: Set the assignment for groups of students to prepare the work at home before going to school. Students: - Study the topic they are going to talk about in the next class: Online Learning - Divide the work of preparation in their group - Draw the digital mind map using the ideas discussed in group - Take their production to the class and share their presentation Software: Vmindmap Unit 9: Protecting the Environment Lesson: Speaking Topic: Solutions to Environmental Problems Aims of the lesson: Help students to use digital mind map prepared at home to support the activities of speaking skills about Environmental Problems and its Solutions. I. Objectives By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: 29 1. Knowledge - Identify environmental problems and relevant solutions; - Gain an overview about the outline and useful expressions for making oral presentations on solutions to an environmental problem. 2. Core competence - Develop communication skills and creativity; - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work; - Develop presentation skills; - Actively join in class activities. 3. Personal qualities - Understand more about protecting the environment; - Develop self-study skills. Stages: Teacher: Set the assignment for groups students to prepare the work at home before going to school. Students: - Study the topic they are going to talk about in the next class: Environmental Problems and its Solutions. - Divide the work of preparation in their group - Draw the digital mind map using the ideas discussed in group - Take their production to the class and share their presentation * Environmental Problems Software: Canvas 30 Software: Vmindmap * Solutions to Environmental Problems Software: Canvas 31 Software: Vmindmap Unit 10: Ecotourism Lesson: Speaking Topic: How to Become an Ecotourist Aims of the lesson: Help students to use digital mind map prepared at home to support the activities of speaking skills about smart ecotourism. I. OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to gain: 1. Knowledge - Talk about how to become an ecotourist. 2. Core competence - Develop communication skills and creativity; - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work; - Develop presentation skills; - Actively join in class activities. 3. Personal qualities - Develop a sense of being an ecotourist; - Be aware of tourism and their impact on the environment. 32 Stages: Teacher: Set the assignment for groups students to prepare the work at home before going to school. Students: - Study the topic they are going to talk about in the next class: Smart Ecotourism - Divide the work of preparation in their group - Draw the digital mind map using the ideas discussed in group - Take their production to the class and share their presentation Software: Vmindmap Software: Canvas 2.2.3. Discussion After the time of treatment which requires students to use digital mind map in speaking lesson, it have shown evidence that students had a far improvement in term of designing map using technology as well as the exploitation of using mind 33 map to improve their speaking skills. In my real class, the use of technical mind map had benefited students in many aspects as follow Software for digital mental mapping can be used in institutions for studying and writing across the curriculum. It helps to simplify the information easily. It encourages knowledge to be visualized or viewed easier to understand by splitting larger or more challenging concepts or theories into smaller and simpler items. It gives learners the ability to engage directly in the learning process by developing digital mind maps. It contributes to the development of cognitive skills such as brainstorming, analytical and imaginative thinking, categorization and concentration on content, reflection etc. It helps to retrieve past knowledge and easily link it to new learning. It encourages self-learning. Students can educate themselves with a lesson even more effectively by the use of interactive digital mind maps for note taking, interpretation, learning, etc. It is flexible. By clicking and dragging, we can quickly reorganize thoughts. Software allows us to construct mind map digitally. Here, several people together can work on the same mind map. We can use the design tools to create quality diagrams that we can easily share and represent. It is true after the time of using digital mind map in language classroom, digital mind mapping software becomes brainstorming tool that helps students to construct visual diagrams of their ideas. With the help of digital mind map, students can construct an idea map, a design map that demonstrates the structure and relationships between ideas. Digital mind mapping strategy requires basic brainstorming software and complicated display and diagramming tools. The usefulness of digital mind mapping software is given below • Brainstorming: Build mind maps – arrange thoughts visually and show them. • Diagramming: Build engineering graphs, conceptual diagrams, construction plans, graphs, network diagrams, and other technical diagrams. • Software development and web design: Build site map diagrams and wireframes. In addition, in the process of using technical mind map, students have strengthened their bond in relationship with friends and the spirit of working in team. The online discussion about using mind mapping technique by digital tecnology 34 Some images of students making products together 35 At the same time, the use of digital mind map has improved it feasibility in improving students’ speaking skills when mind map really helps them to have effective presentation. Student’s Presentation about the Lesson The data collected from the survey showed that teachers showed much approval to the use of digital mind map in teaching speaking skills. In order to get the appropriate answer from the teachers, a questionnaire in Vietnamese was delivered to teacher and the result from this survey has shown as follow. SURVEY OF THE FEASIBILITY AND NECESSITY OF THE RESEARCH 1. Please mark the level of necessity of applying mind mapping technique by digital technology in speaking skills? 2. Please mark the level of interest while using mind mapping technique by digital technology to enhance speaking skills? 3. What is/ are the benefit(s) that students get from using mind mapping technique by digital technology in speaking skills? 4. Please mark the level of feasibility when using mind mapping technique by digital technology to improve speaking skills? 5. Please tell me whether you are ready to support the teaching method with mind mapping by using digital technology? 36 37 Most of the teachers believe in the necessity and feasibility of using digital mind map in teaching speaking skills. Therefore, some conclusions will be drawn in the next part to answer the questions of this study. 38 PART 3: CONCLUSION 3.1. Conclusion After this study, some conclusions are presented as follow. First of all, digital mind mapping strategy is a modern and powerful approach to recall information rather than the normal way to read texts. From the above discussion it can be said that digital mind mapping software can help learners to improve their technical imaginative skills in terms of the logical development of thoughts. Digital mind mapping software can serve as an influential tool, not only to improve students' self-confidence and visualization skill, but also to provide quicker and comprehensive idea for their better conceptual understanding. From this, students can also improve their speaking skills in class when they confidently expressed their ideas in front of the class. This study points out that digital mind mapping software gives learners the ability to engage directly in the learning process by developing digital mind maps. What happened in the classroom also indicates that digital mind mapping software can be used as brainstorming tool to construct visual diagrams of ideas. The paper would be great use for teachers and students in learning and teaching speaking skills. 3.2. Recommendations To the teachers The success of each lesson is taught depends heavily on the creativity of the teacher when the teacher's lesson needs to invest a lot of time for this operation and design of teaching activities to fit with topic of the lesson, in accordance with the specific qualifications of students. In the process of teaching teachers should think how to combine harmoniously the parts, the unit content should not be too particular emphasis on content. Reasonable time allocation for each part of the lesson, should promote pair activities, pair groups, motivate, encourage them to speak boldly in communication avoid timid, apprehensive. Help students use words and phrases learned in practical communication or reconstruct the lesson content in a natural way according to their own thinking. To the schools -The Language learning skills must be practiced according to its own characteristics in a foreign language environment, so need to have the discipline room to avoid making noise for the next class, as well as not affected by the noise from outside to inside. Electrical system must be amended to ensure safety and usefulness when it is used. - Provide additional radios, cassettes, computer, projectors ... (radio less, tapes, discs, the quality is not guaranteed.)
